Fall Leaf Collection

wpe6.jpg (30590 bytes)

NEW SCHEDULE CHANGES: Soon leaf collection will be starting throughout the City. Please take the time and note the week your neighborhood is scheduled for collection. The Department of Public Works will make every effort to maintain this schedule. However, the weather may influence the timetable. If this is the case, you will be notified via Constant Contact and by signage at the entrance to your subdivision or street. You can sign-up for Constant Contact e-mail notification by visiting our website at http://www.cityofwixom.com and select the “Signup Email List” option. If you have any questions, please call the DPW at 248.624.0141.

BE PREPARED: Know your scheduled week! Rake your leaves by the weekend prior to your scheduled Section. Leaves piled longer than a week may scatter, plug the storm sewer system, or cause possible traffic hazards.

DIRECTIONS: Keep leaves free from debris such as branches, rocks, metal, lawn clippings and pet waste. Also, DO NOT PARK IN THE STREET DURING YOUR ASSIGNED SECTION.

BAG YOUR LEAVES OPTION: Wixom’s Leaf Collection Program is designed to provide residents with optional bagged leaf collection. You can bag your leaves for Waste Management’s curbside collection through the end of November. Also, Wixom residents can drop off leaves and other yard waste “free-of-charge” at the DPW’s compost facility (2041 Charms Road) until the end of December.

PATIENCE: Leaf collection takes time. Delays due to weather, the rate at which the leaves fall and potential emergencies are inevitable. Unless an immediate hazard exists, the DPW will follow the schedule that ensures systematic coverage.

Waste Management

Compost/Yard Waste Collection
(Begins 4/1/2009)

The Wixom Department of Public Works has recently received a number of calls regarding yard waste collection.  Please be advised that Waste Management, the City's refuse collection collector, begins collecting yard waste on April 1st in accordance with our contract.  The following information is being provided in the event that you may have questions as well.

Yard waste includes grass, weeds, leaves, shrub and plant clippings, plant materials, twigs, and small limbs.  This material is collected by Waste Management from the beginning of April through the end of November.

As a reminder, compost/yard waste material will be collected if placed in a 35 gallon (or less) garbage can with a yard waste sticker affixed to it or if placed in a brown paper compost bag.  Grocery bags and any form of plastic garbage bags are NOT acceptable.  The total weight of the brown paper compost bag and contents must not exceed 40 pounds.  Total weight of metal or plastic containers and contents must not exceed 60 pounds.  Yard Waste stickers are supplied by the Department of Public Works (2041 Charms Road) at no charge.  There is no need to place stickers on the brown paper compost bags.  Additionally, bundles of small branches will be collected and must not exceed 4 feet in length, 6 inches in diameter, and 60 pounds in weight.  No logs, stumps, dirt or rocks will be accepted.

As an alternative use for grass clippings and leaves, keep in mind that home composting is a great alternative to your curbside yard waste pick-up.  Some of the composting benefits for healthy soils and pollution prevention include:

1.      Increases the water-holding capacity of sandy soils.
2.      Enhances the permeability of clay soils.
3.      Slowly releases nutrients.
4.      Improves soil structure.
5.      Restores microbial populations.
6.      Suppresses certain soil-borne diseases.
7.      Prevents soil erosion.
8.      Degrades petroleum products, pesticides, and hydrocarbons in contaminated soils.
9.      Binds heavy metals carried by storm water run-off, helping to product water quality.

*Here's a Secret.....If you have compost waste items that are very large and cannot get rid of the waste at your home...The DPW yard off Charms Road is open through the week and mornings on the weekend to accept compost material.  This is not advertised and is for the residents of Wixom.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact the Department of Public Works at 248.624.0141
